Program of One week with Winfried Menninghaus at Trnava University:

October 3, 2018, 14:00, room 3P1The enjoyment of negative emotions in art-reception

Ever since Aristotle’s theory of tragedy, it is a key to poetics and aesthetics to explain why and how we can experience negative emotions in conjunction with feelings of pleasure. The lecture presents a new explanatory model for this issue and a series of empirical studies that tested this model. A special focus is placed on feelings of being emotionally moved.

October 4, 2018, 09:30, room 3P1What is and what does poetic language?

Poetic language use is far more wide-spread than typically assumed. Beyond poetry, it can also be found in ritual contexts, proverbs, commercial ads, slogans of all sorts and in everyday communication. Current linguistics nearly totally neglects this issue. The lecture presents our ongoing work towards a general model of poetic language.

October 5, 2018, 09:30, room 3P16-th International Workshop on Cognitive Aspects of Aesthetic Experience

Workshop Theme
Cognitive Rethinking of Beauty: Uniting the Philosophy and Cognitive Studies of Aesthetic Perception

Keynote speaker: Prof. Winfried Menninghaus (Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics): "Beauty"

Beauty is the key desideratum (though certainly not the only one) across all branches of aesthetics (philosophical, empirical, evolutionary). The workshop will discuss it from all angles, with a focus on the divergences as well as points of convergence between the approaches.
